Here is an interesting commission I did in San Diego during this year’s San Diego Comic Con.
A revisitation of the classic Archie piece, Three On A Straw, this one features Archie with a new blonde and a new brunette in his life. Replacing Betty and Veronica are Bettie Page and Marilyn Monroe. This was a collaboration between myself and the incredibly talented Mad Magazine artist, Tome Richmond. I handled Archie, Betty, Veronica, the soda, the table and the background gray tones. Tom added Bettie and Marilyn.
I started the piece in pencil and largely finished Archie, Betty & Veronica, and the table and soda. Then I handed the piece off to Tom who added Bettie and Marilyn finishing them in ink. Once he was done, I took the piece back and finished and inked Archie and the rest. Finally, I added the background gray tones with a warm grey chartpak marker.
This piece was commissioned by the great Steve Hendricks, a long time fan who I had the pleasure of meeting in person for the first time at this show. The whole thing was his idea. I love fun, off-beat projects like this. I’m happy to have been a part of it.
